Charity Walk to Barnsley vs Doncaster Rovers
It won’t have escaped your attention that Saturday brings the big South Yorkshire coal-field derby, between Doncaster and Barnsley. In fact, you’ve probably already nailed down your travel plans, so whilst you get set to travel by bus, train, or car, spare a thought for two Rovers fans who will be making the trip to Oakwell on foot.
Mick and Louis Bailey, Doncaster Rovers fans, and popular STAND readers, will be setting off from the Keepmoat Stadium at 8am on Saturday morning to walk the twenty miles to the afternoon’s fixture in memory of their father and grandfather Tony Bailey. Though his children and grandchildren may have opted for the red and white hoops, Tony was a lifelong Barnsley fan, so the game always has a touch of poignancy for the family.
In memory of Tony, the charity walk will be raising money for Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield, who did a great job of looking after Tony during his ill health in his latter years. Weston park is one of only four hospitals in England dedicated exclusively to cancer treatment. All money raised from the walk will go to Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity which aids the hospital by raising vital funds to support pioneering research and to improve treatments and care for people living with cancer.
