Coventry City 1-3 Doncaster Rovers: 250 word match report

Doncaster travelled to the Ricoh on the back of two disappointing home defeats, but having beaten Coventry on Boxing Day, hopes remained high.

Rovers were slow off the mark as the game got underway and were made to pay, as within five minutes Coventry scored; Dominic Samuel capitalising on a sluggish Rovers defence to fire across Stephen Bywater for 1-0.

After that, the game, and Rovers struggled to get off the ground with the unimpressive Abdul Razak taken off before he was sent off – replaced by Harry Forrester. City almost went two up as Frank Nouble’s shot ricocheted off multiple Rovers defenders and clipped the post; a huge let off.

Rovers needed to get going quickly in the second half, and to the surprise of the away fans Richie Wellens stepped up and slotted under Lee Burge at the near post to make it 1-1. Rovers now looked a threat, and Paul Dickov sent on Jonson Clarke-Harris. Within ten minutes he’d scored; his first attempt blocked, the second rippling the City goal to send the travelling Red Army crazy.

With five minutes left, the points were secured; superb work by Curtis Main down the right before cutting back for Forrester to secure three points to bring back to South Yorkshire. A spirited comeback from Rovers today, not quite football played the way it should, but it’ll do!

The play-offs are within touching distance now, but with only eight games to go, there’s still a lot to do.
