Football on your doorstep: non-league matches in Doncaster – Saturday 15 August 2015

In celebration of Doncaster Rovers League Cup win over Leeds United, the footballing Gods have made this Saturday an extra bank holiday and moved Rovers’ match with Wigan to Sunday. And that means you have a spare day to soak up the early season antics of any other club you so wish.

Of course you could sit on the sofa, or down the club, and watch some obscenely paid men sit around discussing the performances of other obscenely paid men. But why do that? The season is still fresh, the air is still warm, the grass still green, and the lines still freshly painted.

Get yourself outside. Go on, get out in the open and support local football in the flesh. Give your money to an actual person rather than one of Rupert Murdoch’s bank accounts, and see it go to an actual club, where it will make an actual difference, all on your doorstep. Start the season on the right foot; go to one of these games tomorrow.

FRICKLEY ATHLETIC

vs Matlock Town

After a relatively encouraging pre-season schedule was wrapped up with a 3-1 win at Ossett Town last weekend, Frickley Athletic finally get their Northern Premier League season under way this weekend. Karl Rose’s side host Matlock Town at Westfield Lane, but will be without the services of the promising Reece Thompson who impressed against Rovers, as he has now joined York City. Thompson is one of six players to have left Frickley since the end of last season, but Rose has brought in a number of replacements including St Kitts & Nevis international Zeph Thomas.

There’ll be familiar faces, for any Rovers fans heading to this one, in the Matlock dugout with the Gladiators managed by Mark Hume and Scott Maxfield, whilst Oscar Radford is also in the Town squad this season.

ARMTHORPE WELFARE

away at Hemsworth Miners Welfare

This weekend a host of non-league clubs will be mirror, signal and maneuvering onto the road to Wembley as the FA Cup gets under way with the extra-preliminary round ties. Though The Welfare have been drawn away, they still remain on the fringes of the borough as they travel to face Hemsworth Miners Welfare. The preferred club of Emma Watson, if you are to believe the Daily Mash, Hemsworth play in the division below Armthorpe, so manager Brian Johnston, should be confident of steering his side to victory. For those looking for a Rovers link, Johnston is now being assisted by one-time Rovers loanee Ben Muirhead.

ROSSINGTON MAIN

vs Worsborough Bridge Athletic

Rossington Main have got their new season off to a great start under player-manager Lee Holmes, and but for a ninetieth minute equaliser for Emley at Oxford Street last Saturday, would be top of the Northern Counties East League first division. Instead, their midweek 3-1 win over Knaresborough means they have to settle for second place. Form on the pitch has been matched by optimism off it with back-to-back three figure crowds at Oxford Street, so get down there and help swell the numbers again as Rossington look to make a rare foray to the top of the table.

THORNE COLLIERY

vs Bilsthorpe

Thorne Colliery are the only one of the town’s five Central Midlands League North Division sides at home this weekend, as they finally get their season underway. And they’ll begin with a tough task as they host last season’s champions Bilsthorpe at Grange Road. There are signs however, that the visitors are not as strong as they were last time out, as they kicked off their season in midweek with a 3-0 defeat at Brodsworth Welfare.
