Non-League football in Doncaster | Saturday 22 August

Another Saturday without Rovers in action at the Keepmoat Stadium means another opportunity to get out and support the borough’s other football clubs. And you know what, if you do, you might even see some real life actual goals being scored. Proper ones too; not just inadvertent shanks over a goalkeeper, penalties or a fella allowed to stroll halfway down the field like a sulking child taking his ball home.

If you’re not going to Port Vale then you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to football in the local area. Six of our clubs in action across four matches, including three local derbies; and all for less than it’d cost you for a pie and a pint at an understaffed stadium concession stand. Here’s your options; go forth, enjoy the sunshine and live one of them this weekend.

ARMTHORPE WELFARE

vs Maltby Main

The Welfare follow-up their midweek FA Cup replay win over Hemsworth Miners Welfare with another local derby as they welcome Maltby Main to Church Street. Main were also in successful FA Cup replay action in the week, defeating North West Counties side Ashton United. The two sides have just one win to show from their opening league games though so this looks set to be a closely fought game.

ROSSINGTON MAIN

vs Hall Road Rangers

We bigged up Rossington Main’s start to the season last weekend and in the process appear to have put the kiss of death on them as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Worsborough Bridge Athletic. However Rossington bounced back in the week to secure a decent point away at AFC Mansfield and have a decent chance to keep the good vibes going against struggling Hall Road Rangers. Each one of Main’s home games thus far this season has brought a three figure crowd and it’d be great to see that continue.

vs BENTLEY COLLIERY

One of two Doncaster derbies in the Central Midlands League this weekend sees Bentley Colliery make the relatively short trip up the A19 to face Askern at the Welfare ground. With just one game played by each team thus far it’s hard to say which way this will swing, but Askern who started with a 5-1 win away at Welbeck Welfare last Saturday will likely be favourites against a Bentley side who began their campaign in midweek with a 4-0 defeat at early pacesetters Appleby Frodingham.

BRODSWORTH WELFARE

vs THORNE COLLIERY

The other Doncaster derby takes place in Woodlands, where Brodsworth Welfare host Thorne Colliery. Both sides are unbeaten coming into this, so something has to give. Brodsworth’s opening day 3-0 defeat of reigning champions Bilsthorpe suggested that Broddy could be a team to reckon with this season; however, that marker stone has been somewhat cancelled out given that Thorne duly dispatched Bilsthorpe 6-1 last Saturday. Having followed that up with a 4-1 win away at Retford in the week Thorne will start as favourites, but it looks to be another decently matches derby.
