Non-League football in Doncaster | Saturday 26 September

Doncaster Rovers’ short trip to Sheffield this weekend should point to a higher than average travelling crowd making their way to Bramall Lane. But, you won’t all be heading over to get behind Rob Jones so for the 4,000 and more of you not making the short trip down the M18 it is time to accept that you cannot influence the result of a match you are nowhere near, and get yourself down to support one of the town’s many non-league teams instead.

Their are five fixtures taking place in the borough this Saturday afternoon, featuring six of our town’s clubs, all of whom will welcome your support, and are in much greater need of your attendance than the raving attention-seekers of Soccer Saturday. From FA Cup fever at Armthorpe, to a local derby at Thorne, there is plenty to choose from so no hanging about – just select your match of choice from the many below.

ARMTHORPE WELFARE

vs Buxton

FA Cup fever descends on Doncaster this Saturday as Armthorpe Welfare host Buxton in the FA Cup 2nd qualifying round. The Welfare have already played three ties in this season’s FA Cup competition, defeating Hemsworth and New Mills in the preliminary rounds before an impressive 4-3 win away at AFC Liverpool in the 1st qualifying round. Their reward for that win is a home tie against well supported Northern Premier League side Buxton, who also have a local connection in the form of assistant manager; Tim Ryan. Deep in Buxton’s rich history is a run to the FA Cup third round in the early 1950s, where they were defeated by none other than Doncaster Rovers, whilst for The Welfare, a win in this fixture will match their best ever FA Cup run from 1986-87. They’ll have their work cut out against a side from two divisions higher, but it promises to be a decent spectacle at Church Street.

ROSSINGTON MAIN

vs Westella VIP

After getting off to a great start to the season The Colliery have stumbled somewhat in recent weeks and come into this fixture off the back of four successive defeats. The losses certainly haven’t dampened local enthusiasm though and Main’s attendances this season have been particularly impressive with an average gate well into three figures. They’ll be hoping that support is in evidence again at Oxford Street on Saturday as they host league newcomers Westella VIP. The side from west Hull are in their first season in the Northern Counties East League after promotion last season and are level on points with Rossington in the depths of the Division One table. Both teams will be looking to kick start their season with a much needed win.

ASKERN FC

vs Easington United

The new season has been a slow burner for Askern, who have thus far played only four league fixtures in the Central Midlands North Division. With two wins and two defeats they currently sit one place below this weekend’s opponents Easington United. The side from Spurn Head have found some form recently and after losing their opening four games, come to Doncaster unbeaten in three so will present a decent test for Askern.

BENTLEY COLLIERY

vs Dronfield Town Reserves

Mixed returns for Bentley Colliery thus far this season with three wins and three defeats from their six league games. Last Saturday they experienced agonising defeat against Harworth Colliery Institute, losing 9-8 on penalties to their fellow Doncastrians in a long-drawn out cup tie. Level on points with this weekend’s opponents Dronfield Town Reserves, they’ll be hoping to put that cup defeat behind them and begin edging up the North Division table.

THORNE COLLIERY

vs Harworth Colliery Institute

Last but certainly not least, a Doncastrian derby at Moorends, where Thorne Colliery host Harworth Colliery Institute at the Welfare Ground. Thorne have got off to the best start of all our Central Midlands League North Division sides and currently sit third in the table behind Phoenix and the all conquering Appleby Frodingham who put 23 (yes, twenty-three) past hapless Welbeck Welfare last week. Harworth haven’t exactly been slow off the mark either and sit just three points behind Thorne, with a game in hand coming into this fixture. It all points to an evenly matched fixture and worth a visit for those in the north east of the borough.
